Truflation Unveils New Breakfast Index: Real-Time Food-Cost Gauge

We are excited to announce the launch of the Truflation Breakfast Index — a new daily index tracking real-time price movements across nine essential breakfast commodities: coffee, tea, cocoa, orange juice, milk, sugar, oats, wheat, and lean hogs, aka bacon.

Although fairly simple, the Breakfast Index offers an early, data-driven signal into global food-cost pressures. With rapid shifts in commodity prices that eventually trickle down into producer and consumer food prices, this index delivers actionable insights for macro analysts and investors on food inflation, food production costs, and related geo-economic disruptions.

The Breakfast Index leverages commodity data via the TRUF Network tech stack to deliver a high-frequency, easy-to-consume signal and a go-to benchmark for anyone monitoring the cost of living, cost of food production, food supply-chain stress, and changes in inflation trends.

When compared to Truflation's flagship US Inflation Index, which offers much more sophisticated methodology and multi-level granularity, you can see that the Breakfast Index follows a similar pattern as the Food and Beverages inflation, which shows a significant drop in food inflation in the past 6 months (meaning a slower pace of food price increases from the same time last year).

For traditional finance players, the Breakfast Index can serve as an early warning system for food-related inflationary spikes or drops that may ripple through commodity markets, affecting producer costs and consumer spending, and even signal future central bank decisions. For crypto investors and DeFi protocols, the index adds a fresh layer of macroeconomic data, useful for inflation hedging, stablecoin valuations, and macro-hedging strategies.
