Truflation CPI UK Index – 2026 Weight Update Announcement

Truflation CPI UK Index – 2026 Weight Update Announcement

Truflation is pleased to announce the completion of the annual review and approval of updated expenditure weights for the Truflation CPI UK Index (TruCPI-UK).

The Truflation CPI Board met to discuss the standard annual weighing changes, which reflect the latest available data on UK household consumption patterns. The Board has now approved the updates. The new weights will take effect on April 30, 2026.

Impact of the Changes on the Headline Index

The overall impact on the headline index is minimal, with an average level change of just −0.0011 and negligible effects on year-over-year inflation rates (average change of −0.0000658%).

Weights are reviewed annually and updated when new expenditure data or structural shifts in consumption patterns warrant it. This recalibration is a standard methodological improvement and does not reflect new price movements.

New weights vs prior weights

Main changes in the new weighting structure include:

Transportation (+0.152) - Transportation weight increased as mobility-related spending rose, reflecting higher expenditures on transport services, vehicle use, and travel activity relative to other categories.

Recreation (+0.090) - Recreation weight increased as household spending on leisure, entertainment, and cultural activities expanded, raising the relative importance of discretionary services within the consumption basket.

Utilities (−0.086) - Utilities weight declined as energy and utility costs stabilized following earlier periods of sharp increases, reducing their share in overall household spending.

Housing (−0.070) - Housing weight decreased marginally as the relative share of housing-related expenditures declined compared with other components of the consumption basket during the update period.

Food (−0.060) - The weight of food declined as food price growth moderated relative to other categories and household spending shifted proportionally toward services and mobility-related expenditures. As a result, food accounted for a slightly smaller share of total household consumption.

These changes ensure the index continues to accurately represent current UK household spending priorities while maintaining strong continuity with the previous series.

Implementation Details - Effective Date: April 30, 2026

Weights are reviewed annually and updated when new expenditure data or structural shifts in consumption patterns warrant it. This recalibration is a standard methodological improvement and does not reflect new price movements.

  • The updated weights based on 2025 consumer expenditure data will replace those from 2024.
  • New weights will be applied to the Unfrozen historical dataset starting January 1, 2026.
  • New weights will be applied to the Frozen dataset (charts on the dashboard) from the moment of implementation, April 30, for continuity.
  • The index will continue to be calculated using Truflation’s transparent methodology: component indices are normalized, aggregated using the updated expenditure weights, and summed to produce the headline index.

The relative importance details are available in the updated methodology documentation (dated April 30, 2026).

We remain committed to delivering the most timely, transparent, and representative real-time inflation data for the UK.
